Wool rugs are cleaned best by to shaking out the dirt first (Choose a sunny day as they take a while to dry and the heat of the sun helps them dry faster) Then the rug is vacuumed to remove as much dirt as possible. Then using a hot extraction machine (not steam as this can shrink the rug) the rug is washed and rinsed both sides and scrubbed when necessary. Once this is done allow to dry.
Smaller cotton rugs can often be shaken out and cleaned in the washing machine. Simply set the washer on the delicate cycle and use gentle laundry detergent and cold water. Take care not to overload your washing machine, and hang your smaller cotton rugs to dry. so need for the professionals on this one.

Sheepskin rugs are best cleaned by hand using baby shampoo a micro fibre cloth and a hot extraction machine, the reason its done by hand is to work into the long fibres that the the machine cant get to. Once this is done the rug is rinsed and left to dry.

Rug maintenance needs to be carried out regularly with the proper rug cleaning products and rug cleaning machines. Vacuum and beat your rug1-2 times a week as a minimum to remove top surface dirt. This will prevent dust and loose dirt from becoming embedded into the rug pile. If this happens, the rug will begin to discolour and the fibres will be worn away.
If you have a loop pile rug, they should be vacuumed using only the suction head of a cylinder cleaner. For a cut pile carpet, use an upright cleaner with a brush and beater bar.
Pay special attention to a regular vacuuming programme when new carpets are laid. Wool twist pile and man-made carpets alike need regular vacuuming afterwards to remove isolated particles before they bed into the fibre.
